What I Learned From Taylor Swift...

Image
I was listening to the radio the other day and this song from Taylor Swift came on.  I have heard it numerous times.  But this time it was different... I don't know if you are like me and I hope you are not in this scenario, but I don't do well with criticism.  When it comes to criticism, I can handle it and appreciate it from people who I have history with.  You know, friends, family, ministry partners, leaders who I am involved in their lives.  But as a pastor we get criticism all the time.  I don't know if I have experienced a Sunday in the last 4 years with out some kind of criticism.  "I don't really like that song." "The music is way to loud." "The music needs to be louder." "Do you know any hymns?  Because it seems like you don't." My favorites are the one's from people who don't serve at the church at all and they just think it is their job to just let everyone know how bad they are doing and how much better t...

I have been a full time worship pastor for 10 years now and there is one question that is always talked about within the worship pastor circle.  And that is the relationship with the Lead Pastor... It seems like this is a very hot topic for lead pastors and worship pastors.  Every conference I have been too seems to have at least one breakout session on this topic.   For the last four years I have had the privilege of having nothing but the opposite of this problem. What should this relationship look like?  Should it be this difficult to work together? Here are my thoughts on this topic based on my experience in these past four years... Whatever kind of pastor you serve with, God says he's a gift to you.  In Ephesians 4:11-12 pastors and teachers are mentioned as gifts from the ascend Christ to equip the church for ministry.  Worship leaders don't even get a nod...  Hebrews 13:17 tells us "Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are ke...

Sad News....

Dear Resonate Family, friends & supporting churches, I wanted to make sure that if you hadn’t heard the news that we wanted to catch up on behalf of our families & Resonate Church.  On Sunday, March 18 th  we stood before our church and told them that because of the current financial reality and after many conversations with George & Dottie Johnson ( The C.E.A . ), meeting with the Management Scott resigned as the Lead Pastor of Resonate.  Also because of where we are financially the decision was made to lay me off. We are certainly saddened by this news but very grateful for all that God has done.     So what does that mean for Resonate?   George (Director of the C.E.A.) has met with CEA board and they came to the conclusion that they were going to try and continue the church.  What I know is that George and that team are trying to come up with a plan to restructure, scale back & reconfigure the philosophy of the church so that ...

I am so glad that this is true today, tomorrow and for all time. If it every feels to heavy maybe we are carrying more than Jesus ever asked or wanted us to carry.  It is His church and He kindly allows us a to play a very small role in a very significant story.  It is never about us... It is always about Him.

Have You Ever Had A Moment Like This?

Image
Have you ever had a moment while leading worship when lyrics hits you and you realize that that lyrics is what you have been trying to teach and help people understand for years?  i have been the Worship Arts Pastor at Resonate Church for 3 and a half years now and last week I was over taken by emotion while leading How Great Is Our God. To be honest it really surprised me.  It was like a sneak attack from the Holy Spirit.  I like this song but it really isn't a song that grips me the way that it did that day.  The lyrics of the song spoke to me in an amazing way that day.  It was as if I was singing what my heart longed for our congregation to known, feel and acknowledge.  It was a powerful moment that I am very thankful to have had. What are some ways that the Holy Spirit has surprised you lately?

Jesus Paid It All...

As I was preparing for this Sunday's worship set for @ResonateChurch I was blown away by lyrics to a hymn that I have sang a million times. During my preparation for the worship practice and our Sunday morning worship experience I will read through the words of the songs and try to really think about exactly what the writer was trying to get across. Like I said earlier I have sang this hymn many times, but my heart was overwhelmed when reading through the song this week. The lyrics in this hymn are powerful and I thought it would be awesome to post the lyrics for you all to use a a devotion. So here are the lyrics... LYRICS FOR REFLECTION: I hear the Savior say, “Thy strength indeed is small Child of weakness, watch and pray Find in me thine all in all.” Lord, now indeed I find Thy power and thine alone Jesus died my soul to save And melt the heart of stone Jesus paid it all All to him I owe Sin had left a crimson stain He washed it white as s...
