How’s your heart? Man, that’s a big question? This weekend we began a series that might be the most sobering, exhaustive, refreshing and life changing thing that we’ve done at Resonate! We’re going to take a deeper look at why we do it because we all do. Jesus spoke these profound words in Matthew 15:18 (NIV) 18But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man 'unclean.'

The stuff we say and the stuff that we do and we have no idea where it comes from. Our whole lives we’re constantly trying to fix a filter but we’ll neglect the real issue—
the heart. I love Jesus because you find a man that clarifies what matters most to God and what should matter most to the church...the heart! It’s not the rules, it’s not about behaving a certain way or not behaving a certain way that Jesus is after. He’s after the source, not the symptoms. It’s the heart!

There’s another way...it’s to guard, monitor & clean out our hearts!
Proverbs 4:20-23 (NIV) 20 My son, pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words. 21 Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; 22 for they are life to those who find them and health to a man's whole body. 23 Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.

I spent some time today asking myself the questions that I ask my daughter Avery periodically
“How’s your heart?” How’s your heart towards God & towards others?
  • Mad at anybody?
  • Jealous of anyone?
  • Upset about anything?
  • Worried about anything?
  • Stressed about anything?
  • Nervous about anything?
  • Fearful about anything?
  • Is everything okay in here?
It’s an amazing day when we’re able to take all this stuff in our hearts and talk to God about it...seeking the Holy Spirit’s help in growing into the people that He wants us to become.

David prayed a pretty dangerous prayer in the Psalms,
“God, show me my heart as you see it.” Not as we see it or as others see it but as You see it.

Over the next 5 weeks we’re going to do things that create discomfort for our hearts with the purpose cleaning out & strengthening our hearts. I hope you’ll do more than be there but to create some space over this series to guard your heart! I believe that God’s calling His people to a place where the real issues are being brought to Him and we’re able to exercise our hearts because the heart is central to healthy living!
