Set List 03.14.10

• Jealous of somebody, their stuff, something that they have?
• Would you say that your heart is at peace with everybody else & their successes or is there any toxins there?
James 3:14-16 (NIV) 14But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. 15Such "wisdom" does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. 16For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.
Proverbs 14:30 (NIV) 30 A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.
Jealousy defined: Resenting God’s goodness to someone else, while ignoring His own goodness in our lives.
How do we deal with jealousy? We do the hard work of allowing the Holy Spirit to do surgery on our hearts:
1. We go to God about our jealousy.
God’s big enough for you to go to Him and share your frustrations. God is the One who gives out gifts, affluence, status, resources, etc. Talk to God about the stuff in your life.
2. Celebrate God’s Goodness towards others.
Romans 12:15 (NIV) 15Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.
Learn to celebrate God’s goodness towards others. Also, stop being jealousy of other people’s debt. We look at what other people and they actually don’t own it. They’re paying crazy interest rates for stuff that they didn’t need. Don’t covet someone’s debt. Remember the story about my jeep...it’s the sound of paid for.
3. Embrace God’s goodness towards you.
Take some inventory of all that you have and all that God’s given you.
Ecclesiastes 6:9 (NLT) 9 Enjoy what you have rather than desiring what you don’t have. Just dreaming about nice things is meaningless—like chasing the wind.
When we begin to look at all that we have we begin to realize that our wants and our needs are totally different. Also, express your gratitude towards the people in your life that God’s blessed you with.
Gratitude & thanksgiving moves our hearts away from jealousy!
So how’s your heart? Partner with God & do the hard work! It’s been a great series. See you this weekend as we talk about a real minute issue—greed :).
Striving to live toxin free,
Scott
