Do you believe the people that you hangout with can affect you negatively? Proverbs 13:20 gives us a promise and a warning. It says, "He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm." The promise is that if you hangout with and spend time with people who are wise YOU WILL grow in the area of wisdom in your life. Which we would all say that we want that. The next is a warning... If you are a companion to a fool you will suffer harm. At some point the fool's suffering will affect you or rub off on you. It doesn't say that you will even do the things that the fool does. You could stay strong in your convictions and live perfectly around a fool but no matter what the fools suffering will at some point rub off on you. If we looked back on our life at some of our regrets, were you in the company of friends or enemies? I believe that most of time we think we can pull our friends who are fools up to our level and out of their foolish ways. But I promise you 100% of the time they pull you down not the other way around. We need to think of some guardrails that we need to construct in our life in the area of friendship. Andy suggested these guardrails that he uses in his life. He says that if any of these happen it should really bother us deeply.
.) It dawns on you that your core group of friends isn't moving in the direction you want your life to be moving.
.) You catch yourself pretending to be someone other than who you really are.
.) You feel pressure to compromise.
.) You hear yourself saying, "I'll go, but I wont participate."
.) You hope the people you care about most don't find out where you've been or whom you've been with.
