In this series we are wanting to look at these Christmas carols that we sing so often but we rush past the lyrics and tend to never reflect or even think about them. In these carols that we are going to look at each week we want to learn from these songs about God's love for us. This first week we looked into the depth of Charles Wesley's song Hark The Herald Angels Sing. This song was written 273 years ago in 1737 and we still sing it today. A lot of times in Christmas carols because they were written so long ago we even understand some of the words. So our desire was to unpack these words and hear God's heart for sending His Son as a baby.
The song starts off with HARK! Which basically means, "Hey, pay attention. I have something important to announce." The first stanza of the song focuses primarily on how the birth of Jesus was announced. The second stanza focuses on who Jesus is. His deity, His incarnation, His virgin birth. The third stanza of the song clarifies the message of God through the gift of Christ.
Hark the herald angels sing "Glory to the newborn King!
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled"
Joyful, all ye nations rise
Join the triumph of the skies
With the angelic host proclaim:
"Christ is born in Bethlehem"
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"
What is your favorite part of this verse of this carol? For me the most powerful part of Christmas and this carol is "God and sinners reconciled." How powerful is it that God's only desire is to reconcile us to Him. to bring us back to Him. I love this part of the song. If you missed the sermon make sure you listen to it here.
