Come Thou Fount...

Come thou fount of every blessing
Tune my heart to sing thy grace
Streams of mercy never ceasing
Call for songs of loudest praise

Teach me some melodious sonnet
Sung by flaming tongues above
Praise the mount I'm fixed upon it
Mount of God's unchanging love

Here I raise my Ebenezer
Hither by thy help I come
And I hope by thy good pleasure
Safely to arrive at home

Jesus sought me when a stranger
Wondering from the fold of God
He, to rescue me from danger
Interposed His precious blood

O to grace how great a debtor daily I'm constrained to be!
Let thy goodness like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to thee
Prone to wander Lord I feel it, prone to leave the God I love
Here's my heart, O take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above

Prone to wander Lord I feel it, prone to leave the God I love
Here's my heart, O take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above

Come thou fount of every blessing
Tune my heart to sing thy grace
Streams of mercy never ceasing
Call for songs of loudest praise

Teach me some melodious sonnet
Sung by flaming tongues above
Praise the mount I'm fixed upon it
Mount of God's unchanging love

My thoughts and interpretation:

I love this song and this week I was singing the song and it struck me how amazingly true and significant these lyrics were. I am so grateful for Robert Robinson penning these amazing words.

Come thou fount of every blessing.  When we worship God we long for Him who is the giver of all things to come and bless us as we bless Him.  So it is a beautiful invitation to the Holy Spirit to come. The next line is probably my favorite line in the entire song.  TUNE MY HEART TO SING THY GRACE.  God this is what I want to be true of me.  I want to sing about your grace and your salvation.  I want my heart to be in tune with you fully and completely so that the only thing that come out of my mouth is about your loving grace in my life. Streams of mercy, never ceasing. God your mercy is like a stream that never dries up or stops.  Your mercy is new every morning and is unquenchable. Call for songs of loudest praise. These truths in the first three lines calls us to sing a song of loudest praise!  We should sing loudly because of God's grace and mercy in our life! Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above. God we want to sing the songs of the spirit and we want you to teach us the songs of heaven so that we can join in that song. Praise the mount! I'm fixed upon it, mount of tGod's unchanging love. We will praise because of God's redeeming love in our life.  If not for that there is nothing worth praising!

Here I raise my Ebenezer, hither by thy help I come. In 1 Samuel 7, the prophet Samuel and the Israelites found themselves under attack by the Philistines. Fearing for their lives, the Israelites begged Samuel to pray for them in their impending battle against the Philistines. Samuel offered a sacrifice to God and prayed for His protection. God listened to Samuel, causing the Philistines to lose the battle and retreat back to their own territory. After the Israelite victory, the Bible records: “Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen, and called its name Ebenezer, saying, ‘Thus far the Lord has helped us’ ” (1 Samuel 7:12). The word Ebenezer comes from the Hebrew words ’Eben hà-ezer (eh’-ben haw-e’-zer)which simply mean “stone of help”. An Ebenezer, then, is simply a monumental stone set up to signify the great help that God granted the one raising the stone. In Robinson’s poem, it figuratively meant that the writer—and all who subsequently sing the song—acknowledge God’s bountiful blessings and help in their lives. And I hope by thy good pleasure safely to arrive at home. God we trust in You and our hope is in You.  We will trust you to protect and provide for us and at the end of our lives we just want to be home with You.

Jesus sought me when a stranger, wondering from the fold of God.  We are all enemies of God because of the sin in our life.  We are sheep that have gone astray.  We wondered off on our own!  By our own choice.  He, to rescue me from danger, interposed Hs precious blood. God being the loving Father that He is chooses to save us from the dangerous path of death that we were all on track to receive.  And in order to do that He had to offer up the precious blood of Jesus on our behalf.  This verse is the gospel written completely!

O, to grace how great a debtor, daily I'm constrained to be.  Because of the grace of God through Jesus we are should owe a tremendous debt, but God offers it for free at no charge.  But because of this gracious act I will forever be a bondservant of Jesus.  A slave who has freely chosen to give up my right in a vow of love to Jesus for laying down His life for me. Let thy goodness like a fetter bind my wondering heart to thee.  God because of your goodness I do not want my heart and affections to wonder. I want them to always be with You.  So would you bind my heart to be chained to you all my life. Prone to wander Lord I feel it, prone to leave the God I love. The Lord know us and He knows that it is in our nature as sinful man to fall astray and walk away from the love of God.  Our flesh is our sinful earthly desire that we sometime choose above the life and plan of God. Here's my heart, O take and seal it. seal it for thy courts above.  God we what you to have our hearts completely.  And the beautiful thing about that is when we give Jesus our life He send us the gift of the Holy Spirit which scripture says is a seal on our heart and securing us for heaven.  Through the Holy Spirit our life and eternity is sealed up as a guarantee!
