I have been a Worship Pastor for almost 13 years now which really isn't a long time.  But there is one thing that I am glad that I found out early. And that is that being a Worship Pastor is far less about leading songs as it is leading people.  Most of us get starting in worship ministry because we love music and God has put this huge calling and burden on our lives to use our gifts in that area and then we realize that is really has nothing to do with music... its all about leading people.

I have a philosophy when it comes to leading on Sunday mornings and it is called the 15/15/70 Rule.  The 15/15/70 Rule is this:

  • 15 percent of the people that come into our building on the weekends love the musical time of worship. They are prepared as soon as the music starts. They lift there hands and are already completely gone we just get to sit there and watch 'em burn.  They need no encouragement or for anyone to tell them what to do.
  • Another 15 percent of people have decided before coming in that they will never be like the first 15 percent.  Actually they would rather be anywhere but where they are at the moment.  They are more than likely there unwillingly. So at no point is there anything you can do to change their minds... that is completely up to the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit alone.
  • Then there is 70 percent of the people left... These are the 70 that I normally focus on or at least try to.  These are the people that are willing to go with you if you will just help them and lead them.  They want to go where you've been they just don't know how.  So plan and focus on those and you will see a great return in leading people.  This group is ready and waiting for you to show them and teach them the way!

You've lead for 13 "tears"? I know it's been more tears than that.
I love your heart for God's people. You have the heart for worship ,and the understand the heart OF worship. I'm happy to be one of the 15% that just loves to go there all the time. It is filling to my soul. I pray for the other 15%, and try to find a way to stand next to the 70%. Thanks for the reminder. Much love.
