Follow Me...

So a couple weekends ago we decided as a family to go to the place where I proposed to Kristy and show Greenlee where it all went down... That place was Lover's Leap at Natural Bridge here in Kentucky.  For those of you that know me I am "indoorsy" as Jim Gaffigan says.  So I was hoping when I proposed over 11 years ago that I would never have to go back there again... like ever.  But Greenlee really wanted to go see where I proposed and where her Mommy said yes.  It also doesn't hurt that Kristy will climb a mountain at the drop of a hat.  So we took off for the day and went to Natural Bridge.

When we got there it was really muddy.  In fact there were numerous times we had to get off the trail (which led to tons of bug bites for me) in order to stay clear of the mud.  There was one time in particular where Kristy went through and then she was trying to explain to our 6 year old daughter how to navigate best through the mud.  At one point I remember Kristy yelling, "Follow my footprints!" Which made me think...  This is the way we as parents are called to parent.

As Paul is writing to the church in Corinth he tells them in 1 Corinthians 11:1, "Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ."   Paul is simply telling these young believers in Jesus, "If you want to know what to do - just follow me, do what I do, live how I live." Parents we can say one thing but our kids are paying attention to our lives and that is what sticks.  We can say going to church is important but if we rarely go or only go when there is nothing better going on our kids know that we are not being honest and church attendance will not be important to them as they grow up.  If we say serving the church is important but we ourselves don't serve, your kids will not serve. There is nothing more important to our kids than how we as parents live our lives.  They will become like us... for some that is a good thing... for others it couldn't be worse.  I pray that we can all be parents where our priorities are in line and that it is obvious to our kids and everyone else around us who and what is most important to our lives.  May we be parents that say, "Follow me as I follow Christ."

Greenlee... follow me as I follow Christ.

Maris... follow me as I follow Christ.
