Lift Worship Leader Collective (Main Session One)

(These are my notes from the Main Session One from Lift Worship Leader Collective 2013 at Passion City Church)

  • The main thing our churches need from us as worship pastors is for us to have more and more of HIM.  Not better songs and worship sets...
  • Our mission as worship pastors should be to lead people to have authentic, meaningful encounters with Jesus every worship experience.
  • We as worship pastors are direct descendants of the Levites. We have the exact same calling as they did in the Bible which is to carry the presence of God to the people.
  • We have in some miraculous and amazing way been given the calling to carry something.  To carry the very person of and presence of Jesus to people.  It is more than a sermon.  It is more than a set list.  We are carriers of God to the people.
  • 2 Corinthians 4:7-9 (ESV) "But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that they surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.  We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed." We have a treasure living inside of us that we carry with us.
  • If at the end of the day we have just lead great songs then we have not met our calling.
There are three things that we are as worship leaders:

1.)   WE ARE PSALMIST: (But this isn't the main thing that we are.)
      - Songs create spaces where people can encounter Jesus.  And that is what we are called to do.

2.)  WE ARE CALLED TO BE PEOPLE:
      - Our identity in God is in being a person.  Not in the title of worship leader, pastor or anything else.
      - God wanted us so much that He gave everything.  God is CRAZY about me / us.
      - If this is something that isn't completely known by us then it is impossible for us to lead people.
      - If you find yourself in your normal life (daily) or in your worship sets not talking about Jesus then you are NOT in love with Jesus.  When you are in love you cannot help but talk about that person.
      - Psalm 16:2 (ESV) "I say to the Lord, "You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you."  from this place is where we have to learn to lead people to Jesus.
      - In our leading we have to get back to the beginning with Jesus.
      - The way of leading is for us to stand in front of people and allow the Jesus inside of me to be squeezed out.  We have to give people a lot of Jesus in our set lists.
      - It is easy to get lost in ourselves in worship. "Man listen to how good we sound!" "Man my voice sounds incredible today!"  It is also easy to get lost in our people in worship. "Oh... look at her she isn't even singing!" "Wow! They won't lift their hands.  Why do these people not get IT?!" But how often to we get lost in JESUS?!
      - LEAD FROM ACCEPTANCE NOT FOR ACCEPTANCE.
      - Lead from a place of love not to get love.
      - 2 Corinthians 4:5 "For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake."

3.) WE ARE CALLED TO BE PASTORS:
      - If we only have a short amount of words to be said on Sundays make sure our words are encouraging and uplifting to lead people to have an encounter with Jesus.  WE WANT TO LEAD PEOPLE!
-People are not always in the place to make the connection we hope that they would get.  And a lot of them DO NOT GET IT.  They are just thinking about where they parked.... Sometime we have to grab their attention and lead them to Jesus.
      - God thank you that I am a shepherd and that You are leading me.  And because You are leading me I can lead others.
      - We have to get back to the place where Jesus first found us.  That is the beginning of being pastors.
     - We have to lay down our Psalmist roles to just be a person who is madly in love with Jesus!
     - We have to first love scripture.
